The teenager who was killed in a single-car crash Friday was confirmed to be a student at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC) and has been identified by the Ohio State Highway Patrol as 16-year-old Brock Jones.
The crash happened along Scotts Corners Road near Jones Road in Palmyra Township in Portage County.
According to the release, the crash happened around 10 p.m. Friday and involved a 2024 Chevrolet Camaro with four teenagers inside.
State Troopers say a 17-year-old female was driving with three passengers between the ages of 16 and 18, including a teenager from Lake Milton.
MCCTC confirmed with 21 News that Jones was a junior welding student at the school. A representative for MCCTC said the teen's home district was Springfield Local Schools, but he had previously been a student at the Boardman Local School District as well.
"Brock was a bright, hardworking young man with a promising future, and he will be missed dearly by his classmates, teachers, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him," said a post on MCCTC's Facebook page.
Additionally, the Lake Milton teenager was also a student at MCCTC.
On Monday, the school will offer grief counseling throughout the day, and therapy dogs will also be on site for students. The school also posted a GoFundMe to donate to Jones's family. You can donate by clicking here.
The preliminary investigation found that the Camaro drove off the right side of the roadway into a ditch, causing the car to hit a utility pole and several small trees before overturning.
Scotts Corners Road was closed for three hours during the investigation and the crash remains under investigation.
Officials believe speed was a factor.
The three other teens in the car were treated for minor injuries.
