Volunteers were hard at work on Youngstown's highways for the "Kick Butt Youngstown" cleanup event Saturday morning.

The event saw volunteers clean up litter from the on ramps and off ramps throughout the city Saturday morning. Youngstown City Program Coordinator Bob Burke previously told 21 News the idea came from a similar event held in Columbus.

Youngstown CityScape Program Director Adam Lee tells 21 News Youngstown CityScape partnered with the City of Youngstown and says it's important to keep Youngstown as beautiful as it can be.

"There's just a lot of empty space in highway ramps that get a lot of debris and unfortunately people littering out of their cars and with all the quick-moving traffic it's hard to address, so we're out here trying to get that done before everything grows in," Lee said.

Lee says cleanup locations were chosen based on how much traffic the areas get, with volunteers prioritizing high-traffic areas for cleanup. Event partners also weigh in on where they want to clean up.

"For instance, YSU is helping out by the Madison Avenue Expressway, ... and The Rotary Club of Youngstown really wanted to address the Market Street highway ramps as well today," Lee said.

Burke previously told 21 News he hopes to turn this into an annual event in the future and hold it again in the fall.
