Wellsville VFW Post facing possible closure
Leaders at the VFW post 5647 along Main Street in Wellsville never had plans of closing it down, when they purchased the building in December 2022.
However, in the wake of declining memberships, and negative rumors spread on social media, closing down could be on the table.
"We're having a hard time with memberships, rumors, and people not wanting to come in and support." said Tina Clifford, quartermaster of the post.
"One of the biggest things is that we are racist in this building, especially commander and that is untrue. We welcome everybody into this establishment." Clifford added.
It's an issue the quartermaster tells 21 News, overshadows all the work they do for the community.
"We handle all the monuments in town. We donate to the schools, the little leagues, the fire department, the police department." Clifford explained, rattling off a handful of the many ways the post supports the community.
Traditionally around Memorial Day weekend, members of the post place 1,600 flags on the graves at Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville.
Both the post commander Donald Clifford, and quartermaster say they need more members, and that many folks aren't informed about all they have to offer, from Bingo on Mondays, to Fish Fridays. There is also signups posted for cornhole, and plans to bring a car show to town.
