Police are investigating after a car was shot up near the Himrod Avenue Expressway on Youngstown's east side Wednesday evening.

According to a police report, an officer was parked at the corner of Himrod Avenue and Fruit Street shortly after 7:15 p.m. when they heard "massive gunfire" nearby.

The report states the officer saw a vehicle speeding by with a male suspect shooting from a dark long gun out of the passenger side window.

According to the report, the officer tried to follow the vehicle and was flagged down by two witnesses who said a blue sedan was struck by the gunfire.

After a search for the victim and suspect vehicle, the victim's vehicle was eventually found on South Jackson Avenue near Lincoln Park.

Officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle who told them he did not know who was shooting at him. Police say the vehicle had about 12 bullet holes in it mostly in the rear and right side fender and door areas.

Police then went back to the scene of the gunfire where they found spent shell casing spanning from the intersection with Lane Avenue and the Himrod Avenue Expressway all the way to the 1000 block of Himrod Avenue.

A total of 50 spent shell casings were found along this stretch.

At this time, no arrests have been made and no suspects were named.
