Groundwater sampling conducted back in February at Canfield High School reveals that no elevated chemical levels from a HAZMAT spill back in July of 2024 were detected near the school.

According to a report detailing the results of groundwater sampling conducted in February, no elevated chemical levels were detected at Canfield High School and it was determined that no further sampling is warranted there.

Sampling was conducted in the weight room and concession stand on the western section of the building, as well as sections of the exterior of the building.

The testing was done in connection with a HAZMAT spill that took place in July of 2024 when a hydrogen chloride leak was reported on the Mill Creek Bike Trail by Saw Mill Creek.

These chemicals came from Material Science Corporation, a coil manufacturing plant operating out of the Canfield Steel facility with the chemicals leaking into a ditch just east of the facility.

A report from January of 2025 revealed that the spill is believed to have occurred because of dislodged processing fluids from sealed piping that had deteriorated.
