An Austintown woman was handed the maximum sentence allowed by law after her son died of a fentanyl overdose.

Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Maureen Sweeney sentenced 31-year-old Brianna Zagotti to three years in prison.

Zagotti was convicted of child endangering in February after a four day trial. She was found "not guilty" of involuntary manslaughter.

The  charge stems from an incident from July of 2023 when Zagotti's son died of a fentanyl overdose just days before his second birthday.

In July 2023, police responded to Zagotti’s residence at the Compass West apartment complex in Austintown, where her child was found unresponsive.

The autopsy results later showed the presence of fentanyl in the child’s system.

However, police say Zagotti and the child's father told officers there were no drugs in the apartment that the toddler could have encountered.
