Psychiatric resources in the Mahoning Valley amid recent hospital closures
The closure of Insight Hospitals has created a significant gap in mental health services in Trumbull County. The situation has raised concerns about access to care for individuals needing serious psychiatric support.
However, leaders of mental health organizations say assistance is still available.
The behavioral health unit at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth's Youngstown, located on the seventh floor, has 42 adult inpatient beds.
Generations Behavioral Health CEO, Mike Orosz said the campus has 76 beds for adults and geriatric patients. The building is located at 196 Colonial Drive, and walk-ins are accepted for those in crisis.
Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board director April Caraway said many adult patients have been transferred to places in Stark and Ashtabula counties, such as the Sunrise Vista Behavioral Health facility and Ashtabula Regional Medical Center.
Mercy Health is building a psychiatric hospital to manage the growing demand for mental health services. The facility, which covers 61,900 square feet, will accommodate 72 beds for adults.
