DeWine pushes for statewide cellphone ban in Ohio schools

Gov. Mike DeWine is holding a press conference Tuesday morning at the Ohio Statehouse to advocate for Senate Bill 158, which would ban student cellphone use during the school day.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jane Timken, R-Jackson Township, aims to improve student engagement, attendance, grades, socialization and communication, DeWine said. The governor previously included similar language in his executive budget proposal.
"Many districts that chose to ban cell phones have already noted improvement in student engagement, attendance, grades, socialization, and communication," DeWine said.
The press conference will also feature Tina Husted, former Second Lady of Ohio, who will discuss online safety for children. Husted, a proponent of Braden's Law, which took effect this week and makes sexual extortion a felony in Ohio, offered strategies for parents to monitor their children's online activity.
Husted says regular and open conversations with their children about the dangers they may face online so they know what to do and who to turn to if they feel unsafe.
