Expect delays: Turnpike bridge project begins Monday along Route 224 in Canfield

Electronic message boards posted along U.S. Route 224 in Canfield are alerting drivers to expect delays beginning Monday, April 7, 2025, due to a bridge project.
The signs coincide with the start of the Ohio Turnpike’s Boardman-Canfield Road/U.S. Route 224 bridge replacement project.
Dan Rodriguez, design and planning engineer for the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, said the project will involve replacing the entire bridge in two phases.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the existing westbound lanes of the bridge, Rodriguez said. This traffic pattern will remain in place throughout the project. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on the Ohio Turnpike.
While traffic will be reduced on U.S. Route 224, access to local businesses will be maintained. He also pointed out that during the 2025 Canfield Fair in August, traffic will be one lane in each direction at the bridge site. However, an alternative route to the fairgrounds is available via the State Route 11 interchange at U.S. Route 224.
All lanes of traffic on U.S. Route 224 are expected to reopen before the 2026 Canfield Fair, Rodriguez said. The project is slated for substantial completion by Aug. 16, 2026.
