A male suspect who allegedly assaulted an Ohio State Trooper and stole a patrol cruiser was fatally shot by Pennsylvania State Police in Beaver County on Friday evening.

The incident happened Friday after troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Hiram Post were dispatched to a single-car rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike eastbound in Springfield Township, Mahoning County, near the Pennsylvania state line at 5:24 p.m.

According to a statement from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the trooper arrived at 5:28 p.m. and found a man walking along the shoulder of the road.

State Patrol radio broadcast audio indicates that the trooper was assaulted by the suspect, who allegedly punched the officer in the face and tried to grab his gun.

The trooper used a taser, but it was unsuccessful, leading to a fight between the two. The suspect then stole the trooper's marked OSHP Dodge Charger and fled eastbound onto the Pennsylvania turnpike.

Pennsylvania State Troopers spotted the vehicle near the Ohio border and joined the pursuit. According to a state police news release, troopers blocked the cruiser, leading to a crash where it landed on its roof.

Troopers say they shot the suspect during a confrontation after the crash. No other injuries were reported during the incident in Beaver County.

The Ohio State Trooper had minor injuries and was treated at the hospital and released.

The Pennsylvania State Troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty status pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure in such incidents.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop D Major Case Team is investigating the incident. Upon completion, the findings will be reviewed by the Beaver County District Attorney.

The suspect's identity hasn't been released.
