A Wellsville man who allegedly threatened a shootout with police in social media videos has been indicted on a federal charge of transmitting a threatening interstate communication.

According to court documents filed in U.S. District Court, Steven Wright, 45, was indicted by a federal grand jury. The indictment alleges that on Feb. 18, 2025, he threatened to get in a shootout with police officers.

As a result of the federal indictment, prosecutors have moved to dismiss charges filed in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.

Those charges stemmed from videos allegedly posted to Wright's Facebook page where he threatened to “have a shootout” with Wellsville police and Columbiana County Sheriff’s deputies if a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Following the alleged threats, police said they found Wright in a vehicle on the 800 block of Main Street in Wellsville. Police reported a nearly hour-long standoff before Wright exited the vehicle, and a loaded firearm was allegedly found inside.

Wright remains jailed in the Mahoning County Justice Center, awaiting an April 9 detention hearing in federal court.
