Ohio State Senator Al Cutrona has introduced legislation to address the usage of AI in healthcare authorization.

According to a press release from Cutrona, Senate Bill 164 would provide transparency for patients on the use of AI by health insurers by making sure there is human oversight on whether or not someone receives health coverage.

In addition, this legislation would require the submission of an annual report to disclose the use of AI in healthcare authorization.

Cutrona is quoted in the release calling this legislation "common sense."

"While the use of new technology is a good thing, this bill ensures that health insurers will be accountable to explain the use of AI in how they reach their decisions," Cutrona said.

Prior authorization is a process that requires healthcare professions to obtain advanced approval from the health plan before a prescription medication or medical service receives qualification for payment and delivered to the patient.

The legislation has been referred to the Senate Financial Institutions Technology Committee for further consideration.
