Mercer County veterans’ services awarded $55K in state grants

Two veterans’ services organizations in Mercer County have received grant funding from the state.
Rep. Parke Wentling, R-Mercer, announced Tuesday that Mercer County Veterans Affairs was awarded $15,000 to support new or expanded programs, and the Mercer County Food Bank in Sharon received $40,000 for its MilitaryShare food assistance program.
The funding comes from $1,021,640 in grants through the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ Veterans’ Trust Fund.
The grants will support 15 county directors of veterans’ affairs and 24 nonprofit and veterans service organizations statewide, addressing issues such as food and housing insecurity, transportation and behavioral health.
The Veterans’ Trust Fund is supported by donations from Pennsylvania residents, including online donations and donations made when applying for or renewing driver’s licenses, photo IDs or motor vehicle registrations.
The fund also receives proceeds from the sale of "Honoring Our Veterans" and "Honoring Our Women Veterans" license plates, as well as private donations.
