Man convicted in Springfield Township roofing scam accused of same crime in Austintown

A man who was previously convicted of scamming a woman demanding payments for roofing work in Springfield Township is accused of those same crimes in Austintown.
According to a police report from Austintown PD, 53-year-old Charles Zimmerman's alleged crimes happened in December of 2024 when police spoke with a 78-year-old victim on Forest Hill Drive.
The woman told police a man showed up to the woman's home on three separate occasions identifying himself as either Jimmy or Vince Calucci saying he performed work on her home and needed payment for the work.
The woman told police the first time the man came, he said he worked for the company that recently did work on her roof and was owed money. Police say the woman gave him $40 and he left.
The woman told police the man returned on two other occasions asking for money for work done on the house and on the third time in particular, he allegedly entered the home through a door being held shut by a dog leash.
The woman added that she only paid the man because she was scared of him and wanted him to leave. Police say the woman contacted the company that worked on her roof and the company said they had no employees matching the man's description.
Later in January, police were called back to the home when the woman learned of 21 News's report of Zimmerman's scam in Springfield Township.
Zimmerman was convicted of this crime in September of 2024 and was sentenced to probation according to Struthers Municipal Court records.
Zimmerman was then declared a person of interest in the case and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested on the warrant in February and is charged with three counts of burglary.
According to court records, Zimmerman was arraigned in the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on April 1 and is due back for a hearing April 17.
Additionally, Zimmerman was scheduled to appear for a sentencing hearing in Trumbull County for a separate case out of Liberty Township on charges of forgery and theft from a protected class the same day as his arraignment in Mahoning County.
The Liberty Township case happened in April of 2024 when police say a woman was contacted by her bank and was told her her account was overdrawn and that a check was written out for $2,841.
Police say the check, which the victim did not sign, was made out to Zimmerman. The woman told police she believes it was her son that wrote out the check because he only comes to the house when he needs money.
Police say the victim's son had her personal information and had done something like this before. No criminal charges appear to be filed for the woman's son.
Trumbull County court records show Zimmerman did not appear for this hearing, so a capias warrant was issued for him.
