The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) is calling on the State of Ohio to increase funds for public libraries.

PLYMC released a statement Tuesday that mentioned that a good portion of its funding from the State of Ohio.

"While our library system has been fortunate to receive over $85,000 in grants since 2019 to support early literacy and STEM learning opportunities that are now at risk, PLYMC is supported by the Public Library Fund (PLF) in Ohio providing 47% of our annual revenue," the statement reads.

According to the statement, the state has committed to supporting services like access to information, workforce development resources, early literacy programs, tax assistance and STEM learning opportunities since 2008.

"Our top priority remains the PLF so that we can continue to provide welcoming spaces, educational programs and exceptional library services," the statement reads.

PLYMC is asking local legislators to support an increase in the PLF from 1.7% to 2% of the General Revenue Fund (GRF) to account for inflation and the steady decline in revenue generated over the last few decades.
