Trumbull Co. man who raped 12-year-old in 2004 up for parole

In May 2025, convicted rapist Deavery Lyons will have a parole hearing in the Marion Correctional Institution.
Lyons was sentenced on March 19, 2004 to 10 years to life by former Trumbull County Judge W. Wyatt McKay on the charges of rape with a firearm and kidnapping.
His victim was a 12-year-old girl who knew Lyons because she walked his dogs regularly.
According to the victim, Lyons asked her to step inside the house when she arrived to walk the dogs where he then proceeded to kiss her, put a gun to her head, threaten her life if she spoke up about the incident, and then rape her.
The victim later died in March 2020 of a drug overdose at the age of 30, leaving behind her husband and four children.
Her sister told a prosecutor that the victim's life was never right after the attack and that she suffered a "breakdown" regarding the day of the attack.
According to the prosecutor of Lyons' case, Assistant Prosecutor Michael Burnett, Lyons never made a real attempt to better himself in prison and instead joined a notorious prison gang, accrued a history of institutional infractions, and failed to complete a "stunning number" of penitentiary programs.
Burnett sent a letter to the parole board concluding that Lyons "cannot be rehabilitated."
Citizens may submit comments about Lyons' potential parole to the parole board of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction through their website.
