What happened to other Steward hospitals after the bankruptcy sale? We take a look

Steward Health Care was formed in 2010 after acquiring six Massachusetts hospitals during a buyout of another facility.

Steward continued purchasing hospitals until it had reached 31 locations in eight states across the US, including Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Sharon Regional and other local offices.

Steward Health Care System filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2024, citing financial challenges as the reason for the filing. Steward sought to sell some of its assets as part of the bankruptcy process, including locally Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Sharon Regional Medical Center.

After Thursday's announcement that Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital were shutting down operations, 21 News decided to check on the other former Steward hospitals to see how they all have fared since the bakruptcy sales.

Here is what we found:

• 19.3 percent of the former Steward facilities have closed, with four permanently closed, including one in Florida, three in Massachusetts, and now the two in Trumbull County have paused all services as of Thursday.
• This doesn't include Sharon Regional, which closed for seven weeks before being purchased by Tenor Health Partners and recently reopening its doors.
• One of the facilities purchased in 2024 by Orlando Health in Rockledge, Florida, is closing its doors. The Wall Street Journal reported that the facility will close due to "years of neglect," saying repairs and renovations needed were more than building a new facility.
• One of the Steward hospitals undergoing renovations prior to the bankruptcy was one in Norwood, Massachusetts. It was damaged in 2020 during a storm, never reopened, and wasn't purchased by another facility.

Groups with multiple facilities or healthcare industry experience purchased several of the former Steward hospitals, however, five groups that purchased facilities had three or fewer, including here.

Here is the breakdown:

• In Arizona, HonorHealth bought three Steward facilities and previously ran nine acute care facilities.
• Pafford Health Systems is the group's first hospital; however, it has operated more than 90 ambulance services in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas.
• Healthcare Systems of America has 10 hospitals and bought six Steward healthcare facilities in Florida and Louisiana.
• Orlando Health has 25 hospitals and purchased three Steward facilities, but Rockledge Hospital is set to close on April 22 due to building conditions.
• Tenet Healthcare owns 61 hospitals and purchased Steward's former North Shore Medical Center in Miami.
• Boston Medical Group had three locations and purchased two former Steward locations.
• Lifespan Health System, now called Brown University Health, operates five hospitals, including two Steward Massachusetts facilities.
• Lawrence General Hospital expanded from one to three locations in Massachusetts.
• Insight Hospital and Medical Center owns facilities in Michigan and Illinois, before adding the two Trumbull County locations, plus satellite offices in the Valley.
• Tenor Health Partners, which runs Sharon Regional Medical Center, was not currently operating any hospitals when it purchased the facility.
• Quorum Health operates 12 hospitals in nine states and purchased two former Steward locations in Texas.
• Christus Health Systems has more than 60 hospitals and more than 350 health care facilities, and it purchased one Steward facility in Texas.
