What happened to other Steward hospitals after the bankruptcy sale? We take a look

Steward Health Care was formed in 2010 after acquiring six Massachusetts hospitals during a buyout of another facility.

Steward continued purchasing hospitals until it had reached 31 locations in eight states across the US, including Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Sharon Regional and other local offices.

Steward Health Care System filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2024, citing financial challenges as the reason for the filing. Steward sought to sell some of its assets as part of the bankruptcy process, including locally Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Sharon Regional Medical Center.

After Thursday's announcement that Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital were shutting down operations, 21 News decided to check on the other former Steward hospitals to see how they all have fared since the bakruptcy sales.

Here is what we found:

Groups with multiple facilities or healthcare industry experience purchased several of the former Steward hospitals, however, five groups that purchased facilities had three or fewer, including here.
