A female passenger was injured after jumping from a moving SUV during a police chase through Boardman early Thursday.

Officers say they tried to pull over an SUV at around 1 a.m. after it made an illegal U-turn at Route 224 and Applewood Boulevard, then allegedly violated other traffic laws at South Avenue and U.S. 224.

Police say the Chevy Traverse accelerated, leading officers on a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 71 mph. The chase continued northbound on South Avenue, with the suspect vehicle disregarding multiple red traffic signals, according to police.

The SUV turned onto Lake Park Road and then Thalia Avenue, continuing to disregard traffic signs. As the pursuit approached the intersection of Sheridan Road and Thalia Avenue, a female passenger jumped from the moving vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before tripping on the curb.

The passenger told officers that she had injured her leg, so an ambulance crew was dispatched to evaluate her medical condition.

She told officers that she had been with the driver of the vehicle at a gas station earlier in the evening and that they were on their way to a hotel when the pursuit began.

She also told officers that the driver had been drinking and that he said, "I can't get caught," after seeing the police cruiser. She stated she begged the driver to let her out of the SUV.

The search for the SUV wasn’t successful.

Officers attempted to contact the registered owner at two separate addresses but were unable to reach them.
