The Alliance Police Department is offering cautionary advice on its Facebook page:

“If you are going to make bad choices and run from the Alliance Police Department, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH GAS. “

The suggestion comes after Friday’s arrest of a 61-year-old Canton man after allegedly leading officers on a slow-speed chase that ended when his vehicle ran out of gas.

Jesse Robert Singletery faces multiple charges including failure to comply with a police order, a third-degree felony, and resisting arrest, a first-degree misdemeanor, elevated due to injury to an officer. He was also charged with obstructing official business, reckless operation, driving under suspension, and other traffic violations.

According to a police report, an officer pulled over Singletery’s 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis at approximately 2 a.m. on West State Street after spotting the vehicle traveling significantly below the speed limit and weaving in its lane. Singletery reportedly told the officer he had no driver's license or insurance.

When told that his vehicle would be towed, Singletery drove away with the police in pursuit.

With speeds ranging from 15 to 74 mph, officers attempted to block side streets, and Singletery drove through a yard, causing damage.

The pursuit continued onto state Route 172, where Singletery eventually ran out of gas. Police say he refused officers' orders to get out of his car.

After an officer used pepper spray on Singletery, he was pulled out of his car and arrested.

Singletery was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Stark County Jail. His vehicle was towed to the city impound lot.
