AA Youngstown man may be thankful that a puffy jacket he was wearing took a bullet instead of him when someone fired a shot at him in Liberty.

Township Police say a man told them he was at a gas station at Belmont Avenue and Gypsy Lane on Friday when a bullet fired at him ripped across the front of his puffy jacket, tearing the fabric, but narrowly missing his chest.

Trumbull County 911 dispatchers relayed information that the suspect, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a mask, was still in the vicinity.

Liberty Township police officers located 31-year-old Dennis Sklenchar of Youngstown in the parking lot of a pharmacy across the street from the gas station. According to the police report, Sklenchar attempted to flee but was apprehended by officers at gunpoint. Police say they found a loaded 9mm handgun in his pants leg.

Sklenchar is charged with felonious assault, having weapons under disability, tampering with evidence, and carrying a concealed weapon.

He appeared on Monday via video in Girard Municipal Court for an initial appearance. Judge Jeffrey Adler set bail at $250,000 and ordered Sklenchar to remain under house arrest and to have no contact with the victim if he is released from jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Wednesday.
