Southington Firefighters use grant to enhance safety

The Southington Volunteer Fire Department has enhanced its traffic control safety measures thanks to a grant from the Ohio Township Association Risk Management Authority (OTARMA). The department used the funds to purchase portable signs, cones, and barricades, aiming to better protect both responders and residents at emergency scenes.
The purchase comes amid increasing concerns about safety at traffic and other incidents requiring the presence of First Responders. According to FEMA, In 2022, 10 firefighters were killed by being struck at the scene of vehicle accidents, and wildland fires and while performing in-station duties around the U.S.
OTARMA, a self-insurance pool endorsed by the Ohio Township Association, provides grants to member townships for police and fire/EMS equipment.
OTARMA was formed in 1987 to provide townships with an alternative to traditional property and casualty insurance. It operates as a non-profit, self-insurance pool, allowing members to share losses and spread risks.
