Canfield man pleads not guilty by reason of insanity in Boardman crash

A Canfield man pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday to charges stemming from a March 2 crash on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman Township.
Matthew Brocker, 36, appeared for arraignment on charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest, both second-degree misdemeanors. He waived his right to a speedy trial.
The court set a $2,000 bond and ordered a forensic examination of Brocker.
The charges are connected to a two-vehicle crash near Southern Boulevard. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Brocker was driving a 2024 Toyota Camry westbound on U.S. Route 224 when he struck a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Anthony Viviano, 54, of New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Witnesses told troopers that Brocker was traveling at a high rate of speed.
The impact caused Viviano’s Sentra to strike a curb and land on a sidewalk west of Southern Boulevard. Brocker’s Camry overturned and slid on its roof, striking a utility pole west of Marinthana Avenue.
Viviano sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.
Boardman Police officers say they found Brocker’s Camry overturned, with Brocker conscious and talking inside. Officers reported that Brocker exited the vehicle in an "aggressive manner" towards Boardman Fire Department personnel as they attempted to extricate him. He then fled the scene on foot, prompting a foot pursuit. Officers reported that Brocker ignored commands to stop and that he was taken into custody after a struggle, during which he resisted arrest.
Brocker was hospitalized for potential injuries sustained in the rollover crash.
The Ohio State Patrol conducted the crash and OVI investigation. Brocker was later served with a summons for the charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
