A credit card skimmer was discovered on a cash register at the Marc's store in Boardman.

The store manager at the Tiffany Boulevard location reported finding the skimmer on register number 9 at approximately 7:30 a.m. Friday. Credit card skimmers are used to steal financial data and personal information from unsuspecting customers.

According to a police report, store employees check all registers several times daily. The register where the skimmer was found was last inspected around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The manager discovered the device when a key, designed to detect tampered terminals, would not fully insert into the chip reader. He also noticed the plastic on the lower portion of the terminal appeared different from other registers. He used a knife to remove the skimmer.

Boardman police officers photographed the device and took it to the police station as evidence.

The store manager informed police that the store's IT staff would attempt to locate surveillance video of the individual or individuals who placed the skimmer.

21 News has contacted Marc’s corporate office to inquire whether any customer data was compromised and is awaiting a response.

This incident follows similar discoveries of skimmers at stores in Boardman, as well as in Cortland and Newton Falls in Trumbull County.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has issued a warning to recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, urging them to be vigilant about skimmers used to steal Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) numbers.
