A Leavittsburg man is facing an animal cruelty charge after a dog was found abandoned and emaciated in cold weather earlier in March.

According to a Facebook post from Healthy Hearts & Paws Project President and CEO Jason Cooke, the dog was found behind a home on Bechtel Road. Cooke says he appeared to be underweight with no no access to food or water.

Cooke added that the dog had no access to proper shelter and was shivering in temperatures that felt like 27 degrees. The dog was taken to the animal shelter at the Healthy Hearts & Paws Project.

Cooke tells 21 News 31-year-old Brae Menteer has since been charged in connection with this case. Court records show Menteer is facing one second degree misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals.

Court records show Menteer is set to be arraigned March 19.

Cooke said the dog, now named Stella, was adopted Monday.
