There was never an active fire in the building, but something had exploded on the roof above the cafeteria causing a generator to malfunction and smoke to billow into the building.

All students are safe after Poland McKinley Elementary School was evacuated due to an explosion on the roof of the building Monday afternoon.
Superintendent Craig Hockenberry tells 21 News there was never an active fire in the building, but something had exploded on the roof above the cafeteria causing a generator to malfunction and smoke to billow into the building.
Hockenberry says the building had to be evacuated with all students getting outside safely.
The building has since been cleared and classes have resumed as normal.
