Electric rates in Canfield Township to nearly double in June

Electricity rates in Canfield Township are set to nearly double in June.
Canfield Township Administrator Keith Rogers tells 21 News that township trustees approved NOPEC for electrical aggregation for the next year. Rogers said NOPEC offered the best rate this time around.
As it stands, Canfield Township residents pay 4.92 cents per kilowatt hour and will continue paying that rate until the end of May. Starting in June, that number will nearly double to 8.49 cents per kilowatt hour.
Rogers tells 21 News this increase is due to the amount of coal plants that shut down, which resulted in higher utility costs.
Rogers says this will be a fixed rate effective until May of 2026. By then, Rogers says he hopes rates could come back down by then, but that all depends on the market.
