Youngstown State University has launched a brand-new app designed to improve safety for students, faculty and staff across campus.

The new app is called PENGUINsafe and was developed in collaboration with YSU's police department, information technology department and office of marketing and communications.

The app integrates seamlessly with the university's PenguinAlert system to provide enhanced support in times of need by sending real-time safety alerts and providing instant access to critical campus resources.

"This app reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing campus safety and provides students, faculty and staff with the tools they need to feel secure while on campus or walking between locations," said YSU Police Chief Shawn Varso.

Key features of the app include:

- A panic button for users to send their location in real time to YSU police

- Safety notifications and instructions from YSU's PenguinAlert system

- Quick access to contact emergency services or to report non-emergencies specific to the YSU area

- Multiple ways to report safety or security concerns directly to YSU security

- A safety toolbox to enhance personal safety in various situations

- The ability to review previous notifications with the corresponding date and time

- The ability to send your location and an "I'm OK" message to a designated recipient

- Integrated maps of YSU's campus

- Critical emergency preparedness resources to stay informed and ready for any situation
