The Youngstown State University Police Department has introduced its newest K9 officer, Barkley, and his handler, Officer Hope Stoner.

Barkley, a 1-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd from the Netherlands, is trained to detect explosives, firearms, and person-borne odors, according to a department news release. He replaces Gino, who retired in May.

Stoner and Barkley recently completed a five-week training course at Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.

"Barkley is eager to meet everyone, and together, we are committed to ensuring the safety of YSU's campus and the surrounding areas," Stoner said.

Stoner, who has served with the department for two and a half years, holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from YSU and completed the police academy in 2020. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in criminal justice.

"I am thrilled to take on this new role with Barkley and contribute to the safety and well-being of our campus community," Stoner said.

Barkley and Stoner will conduct explosive sweeps at schools and public events, including basketball games, and participate in training exercises with local police departments.

"We are proud to welcome Barkley to our team and anticipate the positive impact he will have on our campus," said Shawn Varso, YSU Chief of Police.

Stoner's responsibilities have expanded to include daily training sessions with Barkley, in addition to her regular patrol and response duties. She also collaborates with officers from Canfield, Mahoning County, and other local law enforcement agencies.

Stoner expressed her aspiration to become a professor in YSU's criminal justice program.
