Ravenna Police: Man shot after using hostage as human shield

Ravenna police officers fatally shot a man Sunday after they say he used another man as a shield and then pointed a gun at them.
Officers responded to a report of a man with a gun sleeping on the floor of an apartment on Hazen St., according to a news release from the Ravenna Police Department. The caller was inside the apartment.
When officers arrived and the door was opened, they saw a man lying on the floor with a gun in his waistband. Officers retreated and ordered the man to drop the weapon. The door closed, but officers continued to issue commands from outside.
Moments later, the man exited the apartment using another man as a human shield, the release said. After repeated commands, the hostage was able to break free. The suspect then pointed his firearm at officers, prompting both officers to fire, fatally wounding him.
Officers immediately attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene. No officers were injured.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. Agents are interviewing witnesses, and the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending further investigation.
