St. Patrick's day is a time for celebration, but police say it's also one of the deadliest holidays for drunk driving.

According to 2022 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ohio is the 10th deadliest for fatal crashes involving drunk driving.

Data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol shows there have been 10 alcohol-related crashes in Trumbull County, four in Mahoning County and three in Columbiana County.

The captain of patrol for the Girard Police Department, John Freeman is urging drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel after celebrating

"We get our share of OVI's, just like big cities do. It's a significant problem, especially around the holidays. St Patrick's day is a huge day for us. And you know, we're starting at 12 o'clock in the afternoon dealing with OVI's," Freeman said.

Police officers said the consequences of driving while impaired can be devastating. A first-time DUI offense can cost up to $1,000 in fines, along with a license suspension and jail time.

"An OVI attorney can cost you quite a bit. So that's another consideration to keep in mind when you're out for St. Patrick's this year," Freeman said.

Law enforcement throughout the Mahoning Valley will be stepping up their enforcement starting Saturday night.
