The Youngstown FBI office is advising the public to be vigilant of their surroundings and to use caution while traveling on spring break.

If you're going outside of the U.S., the FBI warns of increased dangers of international travel, including crime, theft, fraud and kidnapping.

“Helping the public become aware of unsuspected dangers are just one way the FBI works to protect the American people,” said FBI Youngstown Supervisory Special Resident Agent Corey Taylor.

Taylor is urging parents to have conversations with their children about upcoming spring break trips.

'"Whether you are traveling on your yearly family vacation or a group of college students heading off for spring break fun, know that there are risks and any one of us can be a target. Criminals do not discriminate; if there is a chance, they will capitalize on the opportunity. Typically, it is when we let our guard down because we are either rushing to catch a flight, visiting places of interest, relaxing at a bar, by the pool or a beach, or simply too trusting of others who may seem like they want to ‘help’," Taylor said.

The FBI offers this advice while planning a trip abroad or outside of the country:

  • Check travel advisories for your destination.
  • Establish points of contact for your family or group in the event of an emergency.
  • Avoid traveling alone.
  • Be conscious of your surroundings and avoid areas you believe could put you at risk.
  • Only use authorized taxis/shuttles, as passengers have been robbed or kidnapped while using taxis.
  • The FBI also advises avoiding any actions that are illegal, improper or indiscreet.
  • If you believe someone is following you, it's important to take mental notes of the person and quickly report any information to security officials.

Before finalizing plans, the FBI suggests you review the health and security alert issued by the U.S. Department of State: Travel Advisories.

If you see or hear suspicious activity when traveling, contact the local law enforcement agency or 1-800-CALL-FBI or online at tips.fbi.gov.
