A freeway overpass in Boardman will remain closed to traffic until further notice following a crash involving a garbage truck Wednesday morning.

A representative for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) tells 21 News the Walker Mill Overpass on Interstate 680 in Boardman will be closed indefinitely after a garbage truck's hydraulic arms struck the overpass just after 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The truck driver wasn’t seriously injured, but firefighters report that steel underneath the bridge deck has been damaged. Troopers say the garbage truck driver was cited for being over height.

Walker Mill Road connects South Avenue and North Lima Road. Township officials are asking drivers of the nearly 4,000 cars and trucks that used the road daily to find an alternate route.

Some debris that fell from the truck slashed the tires of a car driving in the area.
