Residents of the Village of McDonald will soon need to start paying to have their garbage collected.

McDonald Office Manager Amy Cunningham tells 21 News the Village of McDonald is one of the last municipalities in Ohio to provide free garbage service for residents. The village paid $225,000 per year to provide this service.

However, a look at the village's current budget showed that this was no longer sustainable, so Village Council passed a resolution to pass that cost on to residents.

Cunningham says the cost for garbage pickup will be a quarterly cost between $40 and $50. Residents will be billed directly by Ohio Valley Waste and should expect to start seeing those bills by either August or September.

Cunningham says the money saved from no longer providing this service will go back into the general fund to be used for other necessary services.
