The second phase of a $1.6 million water main replacement project in downtown Struthers is set to begin next week.
Aqua Ohio Area Manager Jennifer Johnson is quoted in a press release saying the project's goal is to increase water flow and improve the reliability of service through Struthers, as well as the neighboring City of Campbell.
Phase two of the project will consist of the replacement of more than half a mile of old water main with new ductile iron pipe which is stronger, and more corrosion-resistant.
Additionally, phase two will see the installation of six new fire hydrants and 14 new valves to isolate sections of main for future maintenance or repairs, as well as the installation of new Aqua-owned service lines for 33 customers.
Any property with lead or galvanized customer-owned service lines will be replaced free of charge through Aqua's Lead Service Line replacement program.
The project area includes Bridge Street, Bob Cene Way, Main Street and Liberty Street. S.E.T. Incorporated of Lowellville will be performing the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of August.
Customers along the construction route will experience short term disconnections towards the end of the project as their properties are connected to the new mains. These customers will receive notifications prior to service being disrupted.
During the construction period, access to all area businesses will be maintained, but traffic patterns will be adjusted temporarily when work is active in the immediate area.
Aqua Ohio is reminding drivers to use extra caution and be mindful of traffic flaggers and work zone signage.
