2000: When Al Gore lands in Cleveland for a campaign stop he is greeted by sign-carrying opponents of the WTI waste incinerator in East Liverpool, including  Dick Wolf, president of the East Liverpool Board of Education, and Terri Swearingen, coordinator of the Tri-State Environmental Council. As vice president, Gore promised in 1992 to block the plant's construction near an elementary school.

Ohio's two Republican senators are split on their choices for the GOP presidential nomination. Sen. George Voinovich supports Texas Gov. George Bush,, and Sen. Mike DeWine supports Arizona Sen. John McCain.

The Arby's Foundation gave Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Mahoning and Trumbull counties six computers. 

 

1985: Mahoning County Sheriff Edward Nemeth delivers a searing indictment of the department he inherited in January, saying it lack written procedures, policies and rules,  but even as he paints a picture of a department in disarray, he is careful not to mention the names of his predecessor, U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. He said there were hundreds of gun-carrying reserve deputies whose paperwork was incomplete and who weren't putting in the required 20 hours of volunteer work a month.

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. has a staff of 10 full-time and part-time employees and a payroll of $376,000. The highest-paid employee is administrative assistant Atty. Henry DiBlasio is paid $30,000. Former Youngstown Fire Chief Charles O'Nesti is paid $30,000.

U.S. Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa., says Medicare changes have resulted in patients being discharged from hospitals "quicker and sicker." Heinz is chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.

 

1975: James A. Marshall, a toll collector on the East Liverpool-Newell Bridge, is killed by a shotgun blast fired by a traveler going from Ohio to  West Virginia. 

General Motors Corp. will soon begin equipping some Lordstown-built Chevrolet Vegas with aluminum deck lids, replacing steel. These are the first aluminum deck lids in the U.S. auto industry. 

Campbell police and firemen recover from the blue flu less than a day after Mayor Rocco Mico agrees to negotiate holiday pay, the last impediment to reaching a new contract.

 

1950: Robert J. Woods, the Youngstown lad once described by his college teacher as unfit to be an aeronautical engineer, is presented the Medal of Freedom by President Harry Truman for designing some of the aircraft that helped the United States win World War II.
