McDonald's celebrates Egg McMuffin anniversary with discounted prices amidst egg shortage

Despite the significant rise in egg prices, McDonald's has announced a promotional celebration for the 50th anniversary of its Egg McMuffin, offering discounted prices.
On March 2nd, customers can purchase an Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg for just $1 through the McDonald's mobile app. From March 3rd to March 30th, a "buy-one-get-one-free" deal on the Sausage McMuffin with Egg will be available for McDelivery orders placed via the app.
Joe Erlinger, President of McDonald's USA, emphasized the importance of breakfast to the brand, stating, "Breakfast is a cornerstone of McDonald's." He highlighted the company's commitment to providing breakfast options with "great value and high-quality ingredients."
The promotion comes as other restaurants, like Denny's, face challenges due to the soaring cost of eggs. As previously reported by 21 News, Denny's has implemented a temporary surcharge on all menu items, including egg-containing dishes, at select locations, directly attributing the extra cost to rising egg prices.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the price of large, white, graded loose shell eggs from caged hens has reached a record high of $8.06 per dozen. This surge is primarily attributed to the ongoing avian flu outbreak, which resulted in culling over 150 million egg-laying hens. This has led to a 21% decrease in egg production and a severe supply shortage.
To alleviate the shortage, an agreement was reached to import 15,000 tons of eggs, providing temporary relief. However, the situation remains challenging, with grocery stores implementing purchase limits to manage demand.
