Police: Boardman bank branch victim of $55K stolen check scheme

Boardman police are investigating alleged telecommunications fraud involving $55,831 in stolen checks deposited and withdrawn from a First National Bank branch.
Officials at the branch on Tippecanoe Road reported a customer deposited approximately 107 stolen checks, totaling $55,831, into her account via the bank’s mobile app and then withdrew the funds. The checks were customer refund checks stolen from a surgical center in Transfer, Pennsylvania, where the customer worked as a payment processor, the report stated.
The first check was deposited on January 30, 2024, and the last on October 15, 2024.
A bank investigator told police that because the checks were not made payable to a specific person, the bank was responsible for reimbursing the 107 customers of the surgical center. The bank is now out the $55,831.
The incident is considered a “breach of banking,” according to the report.
