POLICE CHIEF: St. Clair Township officer making 'remarkable progress' in recovery

St. Clair Township Chief of Police Brian McKenzie gave an update on the condition of Detective Dakota Wetzel, who was shot in the head on January 22 during a police response call regarding a suicidal man.
The chief shared a video filmed from the hospital on the department's Facebook page, stating Officer Wetzel is making "remarkable progress."
Wetzel had been placed in a medically induced coma, but in the update, the chief shared that Wetzel is communicating with family members in various ways and added that his doctors are pleased with his progress.
Chief McKenzie went on to say Wetzel is getting out of bed more every day.
"Please keep your prayers coming. They are definitely working. Also please do not forget the other two families affected by this tragedy," Chief McKenzie said.
Wetzel is recovering following a shootout on St. Clair Avenue earlier in January that happened after officers responded to a call regarding a suicidal male identified as 30-year-old Joseph Como.
When police attempted to speak with Como, he opened fire causing Wetzel to get shot in the head. Officers returned fire, which led to Como being shot to death.
The shootout also led to the death of four-year-old Rosalie Martin, who was shot in the head by a stray bullet that pierced through the window of a nearby dentist's office.
