Debate continues over future of Leavittsburg Dam

The Trumbull County community is split over what the future looks like for the Leavittsburg Dam.
While the Trumbull County MetroParks Board recently voted to demolish the dam, there's ongoing debate on whether it should stay or go.
Warren Township and Trumbull County MetroParks Board members are divided on whether to keep the Leavittsburg Dam or demolish it. Legal teams for both Warren Township Trustees and the Park Board have gotten involved.
The cost of the Leavittsburg Dam Project is estimated to be $3,203,500.00. The WRRSP program is providing $3,203,500 towards the project.
Some people living in the Braceville area are faced with flooding concerns, pointing to the Leavittsburg Dam as the issue.
Sherry Moliterno recently took her concerns to the Trumbull County Commissioners, submitting findings from DLZ research on the pros and cons of keeping the dam, modifying the dam, or removing the existing dam.
The park board is taking advice from ODOT, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Ohio EPA. All three groups are pointing to the dam's removal. DLZ reports show its removal could improve water quality, and fish migration and eliminate safety issues.
Those in favor of removing the dam cite drowning hazards, adding the removal would enhance biological diversity in the Mahoning River.
Those in favor of keeping the dam continue to pitch alternatives, like a fish ladder or a dam ripple rock. DLZ reports show modifying the dam could also improve fish migration and safety issues.
Park Board Executive Director Zachary Svette refused to speak with any news media during Thursday's board meeting, stating 'no comment' when asked about what comes next.
Warren Township trustees hope to have a meeting with the park board, along with the county commissioners to work to find a solution.
