Ohio Senator Al Cutrona of Canfield introduced a bill to protect the Second Amendment by prohibiting sales tax on certain firearms and ammunition.

"The intent behind this bill is to protect our Second Amendment and remove the burdensome nature of taxes," said Cutrona.

Senate Bill 59 and its exemption encompasses all non-shotgun firearms that chamber a .50 caliber round or smaller and any shotgun 10 gauge or smaller alongside the ammunition for those firearms.

Cutrona's bill also aims to establish a tax credit for gun and ammunition manufacturers to promote in-state production through companies moving into Ohio or expanding existing facilities.

The Canfield Senator introduced a very similar bill back in 2023 in the form of House Bill 189. Like the more recent bill it aimed to exempt firearms from sale and use taxes and establish a tax credit for manufacturers.

House Bill 189 did not make it past the House Committee despite backing from the NRA, Firearm Industry Trade Association and the Buckeye Firearms Association.
