A Pymatuning Township man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with burns after a fire spread inside his Mercer County home on Sunday.

Transfer Fire Chief Phil McClosky tells 21 News that the homeowner was burned as he was lighting his woodburning stove in the basement of his Rutledge Road home Sunday morning.

Fire crews from East End, Hermitage, West Salem, Clark, Greenville, Fredonia, Hempfield, and South Pymatuning were called to help battle the flames that had spread throughout the house.

Chief McClosky says firefighters were forced to get out of the home and battle flames from the outside shortly before the first floor collapsed.

A backhoe was brought to demolish part of the house to reach parts still burning.

The fire chief did not have information about the current condition of the victim.

A clothing donation and a meal train drive have been started to help the eight family members.

Clothing donations can be dropped off at the Berkshire Hathaway office in Hermitage between 9 am and 5 pm, 490 N Kerwood Dr. Hermitage PA
