The Youngstown State women's basketball team hosted the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams battled back and fourth in the first quarter but YSU led 15-14 as they headed into the second.

YSU outscored Oakland 19-6 in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 34-20 lead.

The Grizzlies cut it down to eight early in the third but the Penguins kept their foot on the gas and led by 14 heading into the final quarter. 

Youngstown State went on to secure the 73-56 win over Oakland, sapping its two game losing streak. The Penguins shot 55% from three-point range and 47% from the field in their 17-point victory. 

Jewel Watkins scored a team high 22 points and also recorded her 1,000th career point. Malia Magestro added 19 points and led the team with five assists. Haley Thierry scored 10 points and had 7 rebounds. 

Youngstown State moved to 4-7 in the Horizon League and 9-12 overall. 

The Penguins will be back at home at 7 p.m. on January 29th hosting Purdue Fort Wayne.
