A woman from Western Pennsylvania is facing multiple charges after police say she defrauded her former business partner out of over $317,000.

According to a criminal complaint, a man spoke with Sharpsville police about 54-year-old CarolJean Kane of McDonald, Pennsylvania, which spans Washington and Allegheny Counties.

The man told police he had worked with Kane between 2017 and 2021 running a business together where he handled all the manual labor and Kane handled the financial books.

Police say an incident happened in February of 2024 between the man and Kane causing him to leave his Florida home and move to Pennsylvania to live with a friend.

That's when police say the man tried to open a bank account, but was denied because he had too many open credit cards.

This led to the man contacting a forensic accountant to audit his bank accounts. That's when he discovered that Kane had allegedly been forging his signature to write checks to herself, as well as fraudulently opening credit cards and obtaining personal loans in his name.

From there, police conducted a search warrant into OnDeck Capital, the company Kane had allegedly used to obtain those fraudulent loans.

According to the complaint, police found that the loan applicant was listed as the male victim.

From there another search warrant was conducted on Yahoo, the company behind the email address used to obtain the allegedly fraudulent loan. Police say the email address traced back to Kane.

According to the complaint, police found that she fraudulently obtained $85,929.35 in credit cards, car loans, line of credit and unsecured loans, $51,446.34 in OnDeck loans, $162,515.85 in bank checks, $7,426.78 in other unauthorized checks and $10,261.53 in additional credit cards.

In all, Kane allegedly defrauded the man out of $317,579.85.

Kane is charged with two felony counts of forgery, as well as felony counts of altering an access device, unauthorized use of an access device and five felony counts of theft.

She was arraigned January 17 and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing January 31.
