Police have released the name of the driver who died after his car collided with a train in Columbiana early Friday.

According to a news release, a car driven by 45-year-old Nickolas Thompson of Salem was struck by an eastbound Amtrak train as he attempted to drive around closed railroad crossing gates along Pittsburgh Street just before 6 a.m.

The car landed on its roof along the south side of the tracks.

Road crews were dispatched to block Pittsburgh Street between East Railroad and Duquesne Street, which remained closed late Friday morning.

Crews were working to replace one of the crossing gate arms and flashing light signals that was destroyed at the crossing during the crash.

It's unknown how long the crossing will be closed.
