21 WFMJ archives  / January  20, 1975 | Robert Moore of Leffingwell Road, Canfield, took advantage of the frozen ground 50 years ago to salvage part of the corn crop he couldn't harvest in the fall because the field was too wet for his machinery. He hoped to get 30 to 35 bushels per acre, compared to a usual yield of 75 to 80 bushels.

2000: Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Cronin dismisses charges of assault against a Youngstown man accused of striking Deputy John Gillespie with a car in the Southern Park Mall's parking lot. The prosecutor's office lost track of the case and failed to bring the man to trial within 90 days. 

Acting Lowellville Police Chief Michael Brindisi is replaced by Ken Goist until Mayor Joseph J. Rossi names a new chief. Brindisi said he disagreed with Rossi's opposition to police speed traps. Rossi told the chief that Lowellville should not be "another Poland or Canfield."

The United Way of Trumbull County announces the allotment of $3 million to 29 health and human services agencies, with the largest allotment, $558,804, going to the Trumbull Chapter of the American Red Cross. 



1985: Jameson Memorial Hospital will continue joint planning with St. Francis Hospital in New Castle, Pa., but there are no plans for a merger with St. Francis or any other institution. 

As he enters his second term, President Ronald Reagan can boast the fastest economic growth in three decades—6.8 percent in 1984.

FW Post 4237 in Austintown raised $7,200 to buy a "Jaws of Life" machine donated to the Austintown Fire Department. 



1975: Mayors of Cleveland and Canton, speaking at a conference of mayors in Dallas, warn America's homebuilders that a freeze on new service announced by East Ohio Gas Co. could spread to them. 

Helen Struthers Thomas, 105, was a member of a pioneer Youngstown family associated with the development of the Mahoning Valley's steel industry. She died of infirmities at her Liberty Township home.

Youngstown will receive $500,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to help repair the Lake Milton Dam. 


 
1950: A new hearing and speech center is dedicated at the corner of Bryson Street and Illinois Avenue, marking the 25th anniversary of the Youngstown Hearing Society. 

A Youngstown bandit walks into a trap at the state liquor store in Farrell and is critically wounded when his gun jams during a shootout with state agents and local police who were staking out the store.


Alger Hiss, former State Department official and aide to President Roosevelt at Yalta, is convicted by a federal jury of perjury and branded a traitor to his country.
