Since January 13, the Youngstown Water Department has serviced 42 water main breaks across the 80 square miles that it covers, including several on Wednesday.

Subzero temperatures didn't stop crews either.

"The one thing that we ask is that the community be a little patient with us.", said Harry Johnson III, emphasizing the limited hands and vast ground to cover.

Main line breaks happen due to extreme temperature changes, causing ground shifts, which put pressure on these pipes causing them to crack and split.

That was the case near the corner of Manchester and Burbank on the city's west side where icy sheens covered parts of the street and sidewalks.

Crews were able to find the cracks, before putting a sleeve over it--covering the holes and getting the water flow back to status quo.

Officials tell 21 News there really is no way to get ahead of mother nature's plans, and that they anticipate more of these breaks when the weather breaks.
