Mercy Health cautions against detox diets
With a new year comes a renewed focus on health and wellness, and many people turn to detox diets as a quick way to reset their system. However, Mercy Health warns against these diets, saying they are not only ineffective but can also be harmful.
Detox diets typically involve extreme fasting, eliminating certain foods, or juice cleanses. While they may lead to short-term weight loss, they do not eliminate toxins from the body and can cause nutrient imbalances or dehydration.
Mercy Health recommends a different approach: focusing on healthy, sustainable lifestyle changes that support the body's natural detoxification processes. These include staying hydrated with plenty of water, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, regular exercise, and practicing mindful eating.
