Weathering frigid temperatures around the Mahoning Valley
As the sun shined over Youngstown State University's campus Tuesday, it was anything but warm.
This weather, typical for a penguin, but YSU exercised caution, cancelling classes days in advance of the frigid forecast.
"I know a lot of students do walk whether that be from Lyden to Cafaro and it's a hefty walk," Senecca Fuller, YSU grad student said. "So at least for me, I think it's really nice that they are cancelling classes," she said.
High temperatures barely broke into the double digits, both Youngstown and Girard municipal buildings closed their doors to the public amid these harsh conditions.
When conditions hit hard, places like the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley make it their mission to keep everyone in the community safe.
"We get a lot of people seeking to just escape the cold, primarily in the overnight hours," Jack Trickett, chief program officer at the rescue mission said. "We do have our overnight rooms which can hold about six people per night and we have opened those up during the day for warming centers," he said.
In Niles, a car crash led to a power outage leaving one neighborhood to endure the cool temperatures overnight.
However, the Wellness Center quickly became a place of refuge.
"There's not many towns that are lucky enough to have a place like this. This is a great place to come and it is nice and warm," Roberta Williams, Niles resident said.
"The Wellness Center is exactly what the name says, they make you well," Angela Marzullo, Niles resident said.
Power was restored for Niles residents around 2pm Tuesday.
