FirstEnergy and AEP Ohio prepare for frigid temperatures
Utilities that provide electricity to the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys say they are preparing for this week’s frigid temperatures.
FirstEnergy, which serves most of the Valley, and AEP Ohio, which supplies southern Columbiana County, each issued statements about the steps being taken to ensure grid reliability and urged customers to take precautions to stay safe and manage their energy bills.
The utilities say they are reviewing staffing levels and cold weather operational procedures to ensure prompt restoration of any outages caused by the extreme cold.
They are delaying non-critical, planned outage work scheduled for the week in areas with extreme cold.
The companies are working with the regional grid operator to take steps needed to ensure grid reliability
What Customers Can Do to Prepare
- Assemble an emergency preparedness kit that includes non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, fresh batteries, a battery-powered radio or television, a portable cell phone charging bank, a blanket or sleeping bag, a first-aid kit, cash, and any necessary medications.
- Never leave space heaters or electric blankets unattended or use them while sleeping.
- Only use space heaters designed for indoor use and keep them at least three feet away from anything flammable.
- Never use a gas stove, charcoal grill, or lantern intended for outdoor use inside your home to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Operate portable generators outside only and far away from windows, doors, and vents.
- Keep electronic devices charged and have a flashlight, portable radio, and extra batteries on hand.
- Dress warmly and wear extra layers or blankets to feel comfortable without raising the thermostat.
- Close drapes at night and open only those that receive direct sunlight during the day.
Change furnace filters regularly and seal any leaks around windows and doors.
