The Mahoning Valley is expected to get hit with bitter cold temperatures next week and Embridge Gas Ohio is preparing for the cold weather and is offering tips on how you can stay warm and stay safe.

According to a press release, Embridge employees have been inspecting and adjusting system pressures ahead of the colder temperatures expected to hit Sunday night and last until Wednesday.

"Our system is designed to handle extreme cold temperatures, and with forecasted lows of below zero, we're prepared for this upcoming cold front," said Enbridge Gas Supply Planning and Control Room Operations Manager Joshua Hunkele.

Enbridge is offering Valley residents the following tips to stay warm and stay safe during this cold front.

- Have carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and within 10 feet of any sleeping area. Check and replace batteries just as you would with a smoke detector.

- Turn off your natural gas logs or extinguish your fireplace flames before going to bed.

- If you smell an odor of natural gas, evacuate immediately and call Enbridge Gas and 911 from a safe place.

- Keep metering equipment and appliance exhaust vents clear of snow and ice. A gas meter covered in snow or ice can impede it from controlling the pressure of the gas supplied to your home.

- Remove snow and ice from the meter and piping by hand. Do not strike or pile snow up against the metering equipment or any of Enbridge's equipment buildings.

- Plugged external exhaust vents can cause the carbon monoxide emitted by these appliances to build up in your home. Customers should provide clear access to their meters and associated metering equipment and keep it free from obstruction.

- Do not supplement a heating system lost during an outage by using items like stoves or ovens. Generators could help during outages, but should remain outdoors.
